The Register of Comets

kept by the subscribers to 7645, in which every discovery is permanent and every name has a price

A purchase of 7645 is entered in this register as the discovery of a comet. Each discovery receives a number and its discoverer's address, which no later circumstance can amend. The name of a comet is another matter. Any subscriber may, on payment of the fee stated against it, strike the name at present affixed and enter their own; the fee is paid, in the greater part, to the party whose name is struck; it advances by one quarter at each reattribution; and a name newly entered may not be disturbed for six hours. Subscribers are reminded that Mr. Pons discovered the comet which all the world now calls Encke's.
